Welcome to the second lesson of the Smartlook School. In the previous lesson, you learned how to filter the most important recordings. In this lesson, you will learn how to identify your customers in the visitor recordings. And FYI, if you missed our previous lesson or want to jump right to the next one, you can find all our lessons here.
Why is user identification useful?
Identifying customers in your recordings can help you solve your problems to a great degree, and it could even help prevent customers from leaving your website. If you can find their recordings, you’ll see exactly what motivated their complaint or drove them to abandon their efforts. You’ll be able to help your customers better — and you might even impress them by proactively fixing bugs or improving processes without them even asking you to!
How to identify users in the recordings
Use our API to connect Smartlook to your database of registered customers. When a registered customer comes to your website and logs in, Smartlook will be able to check the information with the customer database and identify who the customer is. You will also be able to view customer details such as their name and email or any other data you may find convenient.

Finding recordings of identified users
You can easily find the recordings of each customer by filtering them — for example, by email. You can even take account management to the next level by watching what your big customers have been doing, so you can better engage with them!
In this lesson, you have learned how to identify the customers on your recordings:
Connecting Smartlook with your customer database
View the customer information of each recording displayed on the dashboard
Search for recordings of a specific customer
Use the feature to improve your account management and impress important customers
Now it’s up to you
Send our API to your developers, so they can connect Smartlook to your customer database. It will only take a couple of minutes, and before you know it, you’ll be ready to start sending your customer data to Smartlook.
