There are a few options to install Smartlook. You can insert your code into your website’s HTML (either directly or via Google Tag Manager), integrate it into your CMS with the help of our tutorials or import and initialize via NPM. If you don’t have tracking code deployed for your project, you’ll have an orange banner in your account that you can open anytime to get detailed instructions.

For any of the implementation options mentioned below, you’ll need either a project key or the tracking code (which a project key is a part of).

Finding tracking code and project key

Apart from the above-mentioned banner, where you’ll be able to find both the whole Smartlook tracking script or just a project key, you can always find these in the project settings.

Installation

Implementation via Google Tag Manager

This is probably the most straightforward way of adding Smartlook to your website. Either simply create a new Custom HTML tag with the tracking code, or choose a Smartlook tag template from the Community Template Gallery.

We’ve created a detailed guide on how to go about this, so please do not hesitate to dive into our implementation via our GTM article.

Deploying the code snippet directly

Copy the snippet and paste it into your website’s source code, or you can send it to your developer via email and have them set it up. This code is unique to your project.

TIP: When copying the snippet into your website, the ideal location for the tracking code is at the very bottom of the website HEADER.

An example of a Smartlook script pasted into a website header:

Notice that the Smartlook script (lines 14–21) is pasted at the end of the header, which ends on line 23.

NOTE: Be sure to copy corresponding code from your account—the above image is only an example, each project has its own unique tracking code.

Tracking through your CMS

Alternatively, check out our integration tutorials for help with inserting the Smartlook code, they’re also linked from the banner in your dashboard.

Installation for developers using NPM

Yet another option is to import and initialize the Smartlook recorder into a page.

What is next?

After you implement Smartlook, navigate to your website and interact with it. Opening the Recordings tab for your Smartlook project, you should see your session under Active sessions, if Smartlook is connected correctly. However, it can take a couple of minutes to show on the dashboard.
